Family Residence Visa in Qatar: Requirements and RP Renewal

Faysel Al-MohannadiLawyer admitted before the Court of Cassation · Reviewed on
Short answer
A resident working in Qatar can sponsor a spouse, sons up to 25 still studying and unmarried daughters (Law No. 21 of 2015). Depending on the sector, the salary must be at least QAR 10,000, or QAR 6,000 with employer family housing. Renew permits within 90 days of expiry: late renewal costs QAR 10 a day, up to QAR 6,000.
Who can sponsor family in Qatar, and what salary and housing are needed?
The law allows a residence permit for a resident's spouse, sons who have not finished university up to age 25, and unmarried daughters. The Minister of Interior or a delegate can waive the age limit (Law No. 21 of 2015, Article 12). The sponsor's own residence must be for work (Implementing Regulations, Article 58).
On 5 December 2023 the Ministry of Interior tied family sponsorship to the salary and housing in the sponsor's electronic employment contract, as set out below. Article 58 of the Regulations sets the same figures and shows no amendment on Al Meezan as of 31 October 2026.
| Sponsor's employer | Family residence condition |
|---|---|
| Government or semi-government | Family housing from the employer, or a salary of at least QAR 10,000 shown in the contract |
| Private sector | A technical or specialised (non-labour) profession and a salary of at least QAR 10,000, or QAR 6,000 with family housing from the employer shown in the contract |
- Parents: with the approval of the Minister or a delegate, if justified, and subject to the Article 58 conditions (Regulations, Article 59).
- More than one wife: if the husband gives acceptable reasons and can support two households (Article 58).
- Women sponsors: the Regulations cover female employees too, but a husband sponsored by his wife cannot work until his residence moves to his employer (Article 68).
What documents are needed, and how does the process work?
Article 27 of the Regulations lists the documents the sponsor files for a family residence visa:
- The application form.
- A copy of the family member's valid passport.
- A copy of the sponsor's residence permit.
- A copy of the sponsor's attested employment contract, showing profession and salary.
- Proof of the relationship, such as the marriage contract and birth certificates.
- Proof of good conduct for anyone aged 18 or over.
- Any other documents the authority asks for.
The Ministry's 2023 announcement adds health insurance from the date of entry, and proof that children aged 6 to 18 attend a licensed school in Qatar or are enrolled in education abroad, at issue and at renewal. Law No. 22 of 2021 also bars issuing or renewing a residence permit without proof of compulsory health insurance (Article 10).
The sponsor applies through Metrash2 or the Ministry of Interior website and pays the fees.
The family member enters Qatar within 90 days of the visa being issued (Regulations, Article 14).
Within 30 days of entry, they complete the medical examination and fingerprints (Law, Article 10; Regulations, Articles 55 and 79).
The residence permit (often called the RP or QID) is issued for one to five years (Regulations, Articles 56 and 57).
If the medical and fingerprints are not done within 30 days, a settlement amount runs from day 31 at QAR 10 a day, up to QAR 6,000 (Regulations, Article 55). For a certificate issued in Qatar, see our guide to the police clearance certificate.
Family residence or family visit visa: what is the difference?
Family residence is a permit that lasts as long as the sponsor's residence. A family visit visa for a resident's relatives is temporary: it gives no residence, and the visitor must not go beyond the purpose of entry, for example by working (Law, Article 16).
| Issue | Family residence | Family visit visa |
|---|---|---|
| Who it covers | Spouse, sons up to 25 still studying, unmarried daughters, and parents with special approval | Relatives within the permitted degrees, with no age limit |
| Salary | QAR 10,000, or QAR 6,000 with family housing in the private sector | QAR 5,000, with a non-labour profession and registered family housing |
| Documents | Regulations, Article 27 | Regulations, Article 34: proof of relationship, the sponsor's residence permit and attested employment contract |
| Length | A permit of one to five years, renewable | One month at first under Ministry guidance, extendable after a medical test before it ends |
| If you are late | QAR 10 a day, up to QAR 6,000 | QAR 200 a day after the visit ends, up to QAR 12,000 |
Hukoomi's "Extend Visa" page (last updated 11 January 2021) lists QAR 200 per month of extension, with a medical and fingerprint check for family visits. Health insurance must cover the whole visit.
When must the RP (QID) be renewed, and what are the late fines?
The sponsor (for family members, the head of the family) must renew each permit within 90 days of expiry (Law, Article 8; Regulations, Article 57). Hukoomi says renewal is possible in the three months before expiry, for one to three years, through Metrash2 or the Ministry's e-services.
| Situation | Amount or penalty | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Permit not renewed within 90 days | Settlement amount of QAR 10 a day, up to QAR 6,000 | Article 8; settlement table; Ministry guidance |
| No settlement, and a court hears the case | A fine of up to QAR 10,000 | Articles 40 and 42 |
| Newborn's residence not sought within 90 days of birth or entry | QAR 10 a day, up to QAR 6,000 | Article 13 and the settlement table |
| Staying after the deadline to leave | Up to three years in prison and a fine of up to QAR 50,000, or either; can be settled for QAR 12,000 | Articles 24, 38 and 42 |
Hukoomi's renewal page (last updated 11 January 2021) lists a fee of QAR 500 for wife, children and family sponsorships, with a discount for three years; check the current amount when you pay. Some renewals, such as past an age limit, need Expatriates Affairs approval through Metrash2's "Residency Renewal" request.
The Minister or a delegate may waive or reduce a settlement amount in the public interest or on humanitarian grounds (Article 45), through Metrash2's "Residency Fine Reduction" request. The Ministry can also put a violator on its services ban list until the violation is settled (Regulations, Article 81).
To check a residence permit (the "iqama check"):
Use the Ministry of Interior's "Inquire about the Expiry Date of Official Documents" service with a QID number, or a passport number and nationality, to see the expiry dates of the QID, passport and residence permit.
Log in to Metrash2 to see and pay any fines. When you renew online, the system shows the reason if renewal is blocked.
If a passport has expired, transfer the residence permit to the new passport.
Long trips: more than six continuous months abroad needs a return permit (Law, Article 14), and more than a year away without one cancels the permit (Regulations, Article 61).
What happens to the family if the sponsor's residence ends or they change jobs?
The head of the family, not the employer, is responsible for the residence of family members living with them (Law, Article 17). So moving to a new employer does not, by itself, change the family's sponsor. But family residence follows the salary and housing in the sponsor's contract, so check the new contract before the family's permits are renewed. For the move itself, see changing employer in Qatar.
If the sponsor's residence ends or is cancelled, no provision cancels the family's permits on the same day. But family residence is granted to live with the sponsor during the sponsor's residence (Regulations, Article 27). Once a permit's purpose ends, the holder must leave within 90 days (Law, Article 24), and the permit can be cancelled (Regulations, Article 61).
A 2026 change: in June 2026 Gulf Times quoted an Airport Passports official as saying that people whose permit is cancelled must now leave within 14 days, not 30. Article 24 shows no amendment on Al Meezan, so confirm your family's deadline before relying on 90 days.
Official routes for family members to stay include:
- Moving them to another family sponsor through Metrash2's "Request to Change Family Sponsor (for Family Relationships)", for specific relationships.
- Switching a spouse or child to work residence through the Ministry of Labour's "Request to Join the Labor Market" service for family residents. A woman's residence can also stay with the head of the family even if she works (Article 17).
- If the father dies, moving minor children's residence to their mother, a sibling or another relative in Qatar who can support them (Regulations, Article 70).
- If the marriage ends, moving to another sponsor with approval (Article 17); a divorced mother with custody can move her residence to a relative or another suitable sponsor (Regulations, Article 71).
- If leaving is impossible for reasons beyond your control, renewing the permit only for the time needed to leave (Regulations, Article 80).
If the cancellation follows a deportation order, see deportation from Qatar. If a travel ban stops you leaving in time, see travel bans in Qatar.
When should you speak to a lawyer?
These signs are worth a legal review:
- A family residence application or renewal was refused and you do not know why or what is missing.
- Your residence ended or was cancelled, your family is on your sponsorship, and you are unsure how long they have.
- Settlement amounts have built up on family permits and you want to ask for a reduction before travelling.
- A divorce, a death or a custody dispute affects the children's residence.
- A son has passed 25, or a case or travel ban stops you renewing or leaving.
